The time has come to move on from your current rental property. Perhaps you’ve secured a new role; are moving in with a partner; are starting to study at a different university. Whatever the reason, you’ll be busy packing your life into boxes and planning ahead for your next home.
As you move out, it’s important that you leave your property in the cleanest and tidiest shape that it can be. But beyond the usual dusting and hoovering, there are often-overlooked areas that deserve your attention.
Here’s a room-by-room guide to help you tackle those forgotten spots.
Bathroom: Deep Dive into Hygiene
Bathrooms can look clean on the surface but still harbour mould and mildew. Pay special attention to tile grout, shower screens and the base of the toilet. A bit of elbow grease can go a long way here.
Also, check the extractor fan. These are often neglected but are essential for preventing damp in Glasgow’s famously wet climate. A quick hoover or wipe-down can improve airflow and efficiency.
Kitchen: Beyond the Surface
The kitchen is the best place to be at parties and a magnet for hidden grime. Start by pulling out appliances like the fridge and cooker to clean behind and underneath. You’d be surprised how much dust and debris can accumulate there. Don’t forget to clean the extractor fan filters, which can become clogged with grease over time. A soak in hot, soapy water can work wonders.
Cupboards also deserve a deep clean. Empty them out, wipe down the shelves and check you haven’t left behind any food items. If your property has a dishwasher, run a cleaning cycle with a specialist cleaner to remove limescale and odours.
Bedrooms: Freshen Up
Mattresses should be vacuumed and rotated to extend their life and improve hygiene. Clean under the bed and inside wardrobes, especially if they’re built-in. These areas can become dusty and musty if left unchecked.
Living Room: Dust the Details
In living areas, it’s easy to forget about skirting boards, behind radiators and under furniture. These areas collect dust and can affect air quality. Use a microfibre cloth or vacuum attachment to get into those tight spaces.
If your property is furnished, give soft furnishings a refresh. Liberal use of Febreeze to ensure everything smells fresh and clean is a good idea.
Hallways and Entryways: First Impressions Matter
These high-traffic areas often get overlooked. Wipe down doors, clean light switches and give any mats or runners a good shake.
Final Touches
Once the deep cleaning is done, open the windows to let in some fresh air. A few hours of ventilation can make your property feel brand new.
Cleaning is never the most glamourous or engaging task but it’s essential to ensure that your rental property is left in the condition that you moved in to, ensuring a smooth transition for the next tenant to call it home.
